BEIJING, July 12, according to China National Defense Science and Technology Information Network reported that the leadership of the Air Force Research Laboratory to promote "universal affordable advanced turbine engine project" a new round (VAATE) Phase III described the proposal to seek the goal is propellant missiles, unmanned aircraft and turbine engines into space to achieve higher efficiency, speed and lower weight, costs.
VAATE is DoD / NASA / DOE / FAA / industry joint project, the goal is to 2017 than the 2000 baseline engine tenfold increase affordability turbine propulsion systems.
The United States on July 1 issued a "wide meeting notices book" (BAA), for VAATE "Phase III and the more distant future," seeking research proposals to the next successive stage II conducted including the "adaptive universal engine technology" (ADVENT) and "Efficient embedded turbine Engine" (HEETE) demonstrated proven to work.
ADVENT project this year, turbocharger GE and RR factory conducted three air flow ducted variable, both with supersonic thrust also has a demonstration to prove subsonic combustion of fuel performance adaptive fan engine work will reach its peak.
Because you want to continue in the VAATE stage II / III, GE and PW will be under the "Adaptive Engine Technology Development Project" (AETD), for next-generation, high-thrust, high fuel efficiency of aircraft engine applications mature technology.
The new wide meeting notices book in seven areas of research for Phase III of VAATE advice: the 2020-2035 time frame for advanced energy and maintenance technology, integrated control, propulsion systems integration (or integration), high subsonic and supersonic can consume (or disposable, not reusable) engine, integrated power and thermal management systems, can be applied to unmanned aircraft and efficient technology concepts.
The technical concept of operations to include the future of air superiority, persistent surveillance / strike, mobility, access to space, "insight" (Vision) system conceptual design, evaluate investment strategies to promote the next generation of aviation infrastructure and technology development.
Especially for stage III, the United States sought recommendations include, to the current speed of more than Mach 3 Turbo engine demonstrator speed range is extended to 5 Mach target value, the minimum "threshold value" is a four-time engine ground Mach the concept demonstrator design.
BAA mentioned potential architecture includes afterburning turbojet / turbofan engine, turbo ramjet engines, turbines and adaptive ducted fan engines. Under VAATE "high-speed turbine engine demonstration projects," small, high-M number of turbine engine test was conducted Rolls-Royce (YJ102R turbojet) and Williams International (XTE88 afterburning turbofan engine).
BAA requirements, efforts to be made to include "proposed framework preliminary identification of potential small-scale applications, scalability evaluation of future large-scale application of high-M number of these technologies."

BAA also seek to meet VAATE targets to 2000 as the baseline, a large turbofan engine, the power weight ratio increased 200%, 20% reduction in fuel consumption and development, acquisition, cost reduction of 60% to maintain the concept of a very efficient engine capacity design. Other special research tasks include investigating whether existing UAV demonstrator engine can be upgraded in order to improve fuel efficiency, Peugeot 307 turbocharger increase extraction power driver loads, and improve cost-effectiveness.
BAA sought to develop an air-air heat exchanger cooling the cooling air, which can be mounted on a turbine engine air flow path, the minimum pressure loss and cooling aircraft engine temperature exceeds 399oC (750oF) systems.
In addition, BAA also sought for "harsh node" high temperature zone (smartnodes) and - conceptual design "of the engine area (engine-area) communication network" distributed control system. The study will determine whether "with a system on a chip" (system on a chip) node requires 0.15 micron fabrication process.
Also, in order to analyze the development of the new engine design tools and new probabilistic methods used to improve engine performance, cost and reliability for the purpose of quantification of uncertainty, BAA called for forming a government, university and industry researchers alliance.
